LOCAL WINNERS OF SOUTH32 STEM SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY COMPETITION ANNOUNCED

Three graduating seniors from high schools in Santa Cruz County were selected this month to receive
a one-time academic scholarship from mining company South32. The students include Brianna Young
of Patagonia High School, Roberto Guevara of Rio Rico High School, and Sabrina Romero of Nogales
High School. Each of them submitted an essay application and was selected for showing a strong
academic performance and plans to study science, technology, engineering or math (STEM). An independent selection committee reviewed their essays earlier this month.

“It’s inspiring to see the focus and passion expressed by all the applicants,” says Pat Risner, president
of the Hermosa Project near Patagonia. “In our own workforce at Hermosa, I see all the time what
happens when women and men who pursued STEM studies arrive into careers where they can channel their passion into real-world challenges, within an industry that values them. They’re innovators, problem-solvers, and changemakers, so we are happy to support these scholarship recipients in realizing their own potential. Our support of their pursuit is rooted in our purpose of improving people’s lives now and for generations to come.”

The South32 Hermosa STEM Scholarship is awarded each May to three local college-bound seniors
with a 3.0 or higher GPA and with an expressed desire to major in a STEM-related field.
