Meet Roberto! He’s a Lead Exploration Field Technician who recently celebrated his four-year work anniversary with Hermosa.

Before his journey with South32, he was already a part of the team at site, working for one of our contractor companies. After familiarizing himself more with the project, Roberto wanted to do something different and applied for a full-time position as an Exploration Field Technician. He first heard about the position through his sister, Naizary, who also started as a contractor before applying for a full-time role. He asked questions, learned more, and decided to give it a try.
As a field tech, his main responsibilities include handling, logging, and preparing core samples for analysis – ensuring samples are properly organized while maintaining a safe working environment. For Roberto, the best part of the job is the safety culture. “Out here, we look out for each other. I’ve never worked anywhere that cares so much about safety, and that makes a big difference.”

Over the years, Roberto has continued to grow in his role, taking on more duties and stepping up when it counts. Most recently, he was promoted to Lead Exploration Field Technician, a role with more responsibility, where he’ll be helping guide new team members, and continuing to support the team with his experience.
Roberto takes pride in being part of South32. Growing up in Santa Cruz County, he sees firsthand the positive impact Hermosa will have on the community and appreciates the difference it’s already making. “I know the project will create many opportunities in the community, even for those who have never worked in the mining industry like me.”
Outside of work, what Roberto enjoys most is spending time with his family. With three kids under 10, he stays busy, but it’s what brings him the most joy.
